Tiers 1, 2 and 4 are for CAC/PIV Credentialing and Suitability & Fitness positions – They utilize the SF85 and the SF85P Security Questionnaires - These are not for Security Clearances.
Tiers 3 and 5 are for Security Clearance positions, which require the SF86 Security Questionnaire.
The U.S. Government sponsors and pays for all security clearances.
Security Clearance Applicants DO NOT pay for their security clearance applications!
Industry (Contractors) does not pay for security clearances for their employees or applicants; the U.S. Government pays for them. DO NOT let Contractor companies tell you otherwise!
TIER 3 (T3) & TIER 3R (T3R) = SECRET SECURITY CLEARANCE (SF86)
The T3 Investigation
The new T3 Investigation is a combination of the old ANACI (civilians) and NACLC (military and contractors) investigations for Secret Eligibility.
The New T3 is now all the same for military, civilian and contractor positions. The new scope is the last 5 years. All case leads are conducted by (L) Linkage = computers and (I) Inquiry = Letters. No subject interviews unless there are issues.

Tier 5 (T5) and Tier 5R (T5R) = Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance (SF86)
The SF86 is the gold standard. Learn the inside tricks that will expedite your clearance. Read the questions very closely. Know what you need to disclose. More importantly, know what you DO NOT need to disclose.
Continuous Evaluation (CE)
The Reinvestigation Case Types (T2R, T3R, T4R & T5R) will eventually be retired as all security clearance holders are now being enrolled into Continuous Evaluation (CE) and Continuous Vetting (CV) programs. The Reinvestigations will not be needed anymore, in most instances.
